IN SUPPORT OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THE STATE OF ALABAMA

You can paste the following information into a letter or email:

Dear [________],

My name is [________]. I am a resident of [_______, Alabama].

I believe that it is within the best interest of the state to end the tax on period products, baby bottle, baby wipes, breast milk pumping equipment, diapers, and maternity clothing. This tax is unfair: it burdens poor women, mothers, and children and treats essential items like luxuries. 16.90% of women in Alabama live in poverty while the national figure is 11.70%. Low-income citizens may be forced to choose between purchasing diapers and period products and other necessities, like food or utility bills. As a state that emphasizes family values, it’s important that Alabama lawmakers end this tax.

[If it applies, you can add a personal story here.]

Despite the drastic harms it causes on the individual and familial levels, the tampon tax amounts to less than .01% of Alabama’s total revenue. Eliminating the tax has garnered bipartisan support across the country (like Texas), with members of both political parties introducing legislation and signing bills into law to eliminate the tax. I hope Alabama will be the next to eliminate it.

I encourage you to support Senator Orr and Representative Rafferty’s efforts to end the luxury tax.

Regards,
